ULTRA Anchor Ring

ULTRA Anchor Ring

The ULTRA Anchor Ring is a dual-purpose tool for anchoring and recovery. It adds weight to the chain to improve comfort and reduce swing in limited-space anchorages, and it can also support recovery when an anchor is fouled on the seabed.

Key performance features of the ULTRA Anchor Ring

  • Adds weight to the chain for increased safety when anchoring with limited scope.
  • Can reduce swing area by increasing weight in the anchoring system.
  • Acts as a shock absorber to improve comfort at anchor by reducing boat movement.
  • Can be used as a recovery tool when the anchor is fouled on the seabed.
  • Can also support recovery if the chain becomes fouled.
  • Rope sizing and length guidance is available for practical use and handling.

Design and construction

The ULTRA Anchor Ring is intended to be used with a rope that allows controlled lowering and recovery handling. The guidance recommends selecting rope diameter with a margin for the additional forces that may occur when freeing a stuck anchor, and it notes that overly thin rope can make lowering the ring more difficult.

Rope guidance (as specified)

  • Minimum rope diameter recommendations
    • UAR27/60: minimum 5/16 in (approx. 8 mm)
    • UAR45/100: minimum 3/8 in (approx. 10 mm)
    • UAR80/176: minimum 1/2 in (approx. 13 mm)
  • Rope length should be slightly less than water depth, so the ring does not sit on the seabed or hug the chain.
  • Rope type is flexible, provided size and length are appropriate.

The ULTRA Anchor Ring as a problem solver

When anchoring with limited scope, additional weight in the rode can improve the behaviour of the anchoring setup. The ULTRA Anchor Ring is designed to add weight to the chain, increasing safety in busy or confined anchorages and reducing the vessel’s swing area. The added weight can also act as a shock absorber, improving comfort at anchor by reducing

A common scenario: The Anchor is stuck

The ULTRA Anchor Ring also functions as a recovery tool. If an anchor becomes stuck on the seabed, the ring can support recovery, particularly in situations where entering the water is not possible or not preferred. For areas known for fouling, the guidance recommends using a trip line and buoy before deploying the anchor. The same recovery approach can also be used if the chain itself becomes fouled.

Scenario II: The wind increases

If wind increases and the chain stretches straight, the ring’s weight may no longer be sufficient. In that case, the guidance recommends increasing scope.

Selecting the right ULTRA Anchor Ring model

Use the ULTRA Anchor Ring selection resources to choose a model based on your vessel type and key parameters (e.g., vessel weight/displacement and length). The selection table and main dimensions are also provided in the download section below.

FAQs

What is the ULTRA Anchor Ring used for?

The ULTRA Anchor Ring is designed as a dual-purpose tool for anchoring and recovery. During anchoring, it adds weight to the chain to improve the behaviour of the anchoring setup in limited-scope situations. During recovery, it can be used to help free an anchor or chain that has become fouled on the seabed without requiring the user to enter the water.

How does the ULTRA Anchor Ring support anchoring in limited-space situations?

The ULTRA Anchor Ring adds additional weight to the anchoring system by being attached to the chain. According to the product guidance, this can reduce the vessel's swing area and improve comfort at anchor by acting as a shock absorber. The additional weight may be particularly useful in busy or confined anchorages where limited scope is available.

How can the ULTRA Anchor Ring help recover a stuck anchor?

If an anchor becomes fouled on the seabed, the ULTRA Anchor Ring can be lowered along the chain to support recovery efforts. The product guidance describes it as a recovery aid for situations where entering the water is not possible or not preferred. The same approach can also be used if the chain itself becomes fouled.

What rope should be used with the ULTRA Anchor Ring?

The ULTRA Anchor Ring is intended to be used with a rope that allows controlled lowering and recovery handling. The product guidance recommends selecting a rope diameter with sufficient margin for the additional forces that may occur when freeing a stuck anchor. It also notes that rope length should be slightly less than the water depth so that the ring does not sit on the seabed or hug the chain.

What should be done if wind conditions increase while using the ULTRA Anchor Ring?

The product guidance notes that if wind increases significantly and the anchor chain becomes fully stretched, the ring's additional weight may no longer provide the intended effect. In this situation, the recommended action is to increase the anchoring scope to maintain proper anchoring behaviour.
